Now she has to rebuild their relationships with fences and the local criminal world and slowly prepare for their own retirement, which won't happen any time soon, planting roots and making herself a safe place and loads of money. Years later, Erin comes back as a skilled assassin with many contacts among nobles. She has a talent for disguising, sabotaging, and digging out information, so Erin leaves not only Garret but the City. Meanwhile, Erin-the girl Garrett recruited in Deadly Shadows-was and is still thankful to her mentor Garrett for raising her, at one point Erin realizes she needs more than Garrett could offer. That is where Garrett helps them: acting covertly, being a double agent, getting inside and out of inaccessible places, etc. Though, now that the glyphs have lost their power the Keepers may require him some more as they need to remain concealed and hidden. Garrett may or may not have to pay his rent, but the days of just getting some money out of selfishness are over. Let's title it, "Thief: Rebirth".Īfter Deadly Shadows, Garrett is driven by his new identity as a reborn Keeper. The proper sequel would have been a perfect opportunity to expand. I do think the story would have been much better had the developers committed themselves to making a sequel and taken the Erin storyline more time and effort. It is like the developers made two different games. For all the intents and purposes, Erin was meant to be the same girl Garrett recruited in a roundabout way. The whole unexplored class warfare and revolution going on in the world have nothing to do with the core plotline of Garrett chasing Erin, which feels like a half-baked attempt at the continuation of the female protege cliffhanger from Deadly Shadows. It is a reboot with a new story and characters that keeps all the sequel elements while changing stuff here and there, making it the mess it is. With this in mind, how the story turns out makes more sense. They must have planned the game to be a continuation of Deadly Shadows but dropped the concept somewhere at the midpoint of the development and decided to make it a full reboot to get the newbies who haven't played the Thief games. (As the "last" Keeper, he'd be less of a keeper of secrets as the old Order was, but rather a mentor and teacher to his new apprentice, as Keeper Artemus was to him.) Given his other instances of dry humor, he just could not pass up the opportunity to echo Artemus' first words to him. He's a thief first and foremost, but no longer feels the rebellious urge to separate himself from his Keeper upbringing. That game's story was about Garrett redeeming himself and becoming a born-again Keeper. This fits into where Deadly Shadows left. Garrett has a female protege out of nowhere at the start, and she has a distinct rebellious personality, and the rest of the story deals with Garrett's guilt regarding his past. Seriously, compare the two and tell which of Garretts feels like he's come from a Robin Hood kind of story. He is much softer, and he even has friends. The protagonist is named "Garrett" and even has a glowing yellow eye despite the fact that he is a separate character-a "descendant" of Garrett. What's more telling is Garrett's character. The visual aesthetics, the semi-open hubworld broken with districts, a third-person perspective, the Cradle-inspired asylum. There are too many borrowed elements from Deadly Shadows to be a pure coincidence. Just finished playing the Thief reboot released in 2014, and I am fully convinced that this game was meant to be a sequel to Deadly Shadows early on in the development, with the same Garrett and Erin as the girl Garrett found and recruited. This idea is inspired by u/Bordanka pitch for Thief 4.
